This grade is available in the low carbon variation known popularly as SS 317L. The purpose of keeping the carbon content low is to enhance the resistance property of the sheet and plate. As a result, the sheet and plate have a higher resistance to corrosion, fatigue strength, creep strength, stress-rupture strength, pitting resistance, and more. The resistant property is highly desirable in the chemical industry due to the presence of chemicals like alkaline chloride, chloride solution, halide solution, acetic acid, nitric, and sulfuric acid. These chemicals cause stress corrosion cracking leading to the damage of plate and their life.
